PJ Harvey - The Words That Maketh Murder

This album reads as extraordinarily timely, however much it tells the story of wars a century ago. That is its brilliance, wrapped in the lovingly crafted ambiance that makes it a fantastic piece of art. I feel like no other album of PJ’s has married her ability to write and perform both poignant, well-constructed songs and songs that are perhaps more her signature style - experimental, demanding deep consideration and attention to evaluate.

The one piece that is missing for me is that, currently, its not *quite* listenable front to back. I think that is subject to change, though, as it is one of those albums that they say grows on you. I’m thinking of it more as building in intensity. I find pieces that resonate with me more and more. Its a matter of investing that aforementioned consideration and earning an understanding of the rough parts.

I was going to say that this is her best album since Rid of Me. Now, I love Rid of Me. If I were to assemble a soundtrack of my life, at least two songs from that album would make it on. Raw music, particularly in my heart, has a large place. But this album clearly transcends Rid of Me in artistic depth and no doubt the subject matter as well as composition.
